Whether you're a seasoned track day regular or gearing up for your first blast around the circuit, keeping your bike prepped and protected is key to performance—and safety.

We caught up with Harry Parkinson, pro mechanic at PBM Racing—the team behind a record-breaking nine British Superbike Championship titles—for his top track day tips. If it works for champions, it’s definitely worth your attention. With these tips, you’ll be working the pits like a pro in no time.

1. Bike Protection Can Save You £££

Crashes happen. So do stone chips. That’s why protecting your bike should be a top priority.

“A few simple add-ons can save you hundreds in damage,” says Harry. “Especially on a track day, where the risk of a crash is much higher.”

PBM recommends:

  • Lever guards
  • Engine covers
  • Radiator and oil cooler guards

2. Brake Check – No Compromises

Your brakes are your lifeline. A clean, well-maintained system isn’t optional—it’s essential.

“Invest in good brake pads, use fresh brake fluid, and bleed the system so there’s no air trapped in the brake lines,” says Harry.

“Always start your day with a brake check. Don’t overlook the calipers—brake pistons need to move freely for consistent stopping power. A quick clean before you hit the track makes a big difference.”

PBM’s Brake Checklist:

  • Clean calipers
  • High-quality brake pads
  • Fully bled system
  • Fresh brake fluid

Top Tip:
PBM swears by Muc-Off Disc Brake Cleaner. It blasts away grime, oil, and brake dust in seconds—helping maintain peak performance with zero residue.

3. Tyres – Invest in Quality

Your tyres are the only thing connecting you to the tarmac. Don’t skimp here.

“Invest in tyres from a reputable brand and always run the pressures recommended by the manufacturer,” says Harry. “Tyre warmers are ideal, but if you don’t have them, make sure your tyres are up to temp before pushing it.”

PBM’s Tyre Tips:

  • Use trusted tyre brands
  • Follow manufacturer-recommended pressures
  • Use tyre warmers if possible

4. Dial In Your Suspension

Even a basic suspension setup can make you faster, safer, and more confident in the corners.

“A good setup helps you trust the bike when leaning in. You don’t need full race suspension—just get your current setup checked or adjusted.”

5. Chain Care – Don’t Get Caught Out

Neglect your chain and you're risking a session-ending failure.

“I’ve seen chains snap on track. Not fun. Spend one minute checking tension before each session—and remember to lube up! Muc-Off Chain Cleaner and Chain Lube—that’ll do the trick,” says Harry.

Pre-Session Chain Check:

  • Clean
  • Lubricated
  • Correct tension

6. Nut & Bolt Check – Every Session

High speeds = high vibrations. That means bolts can (and do) come loose.

“A quick bolt check is a habit we do before every session. Trust me, it’s worth the peace of mind sending a rider out on a safe bike.”

Quick Tip: Go over key bolts with a torque wrench between sessions.

7. Clean Bikes Are Happy Bikes

There’s a reason PBM Racing and other professional race teams spend so much time cleaning…

“A clean bike is easier to work on, easier to spot issues, and keeps everything running smoother. We’re constantly cleaning bikes—it’s probably the thing we do most! Muc-Off products are in our pit box for a reason.”
