Winter riding gives your motorcycle chain a lot to deal with: rain, road spray, grit and, on treated roads, salt. Choosing the right lubricant matters, but so does putting it on a clean, dry chain.

Here is how to choose a winter chain lube and build a routine that works for the rides you actually do.

THE SHORT ANSWER: CHOOSE FOR THE CONDITIONS

For regular rides in heavy rain and persistent road spray, Muc-Off Motorcycle Wet Weather Chain Lube is the most direct choice in Muc-Off's range. It leaves a non-drying, water-resistant film designed to cling to chain links through wet rides. Muc-Off lists it as suitable for standard, O-ring, X-ring and Z-ring motorcycle chains.

If your winter rides mix wet and dry roads, especially over longer distances, Motorcycle All-Weather Chain Lube is a flexible option. Its water-repellent, non-fling formulation is designed for year-round riding and longer intervals between applications. For winter trail riding, mud and rough terrain, Muc-Off also makes an Off-Road All-Weather Chain Lube.

The season alone does not decide it. Choose for how wet and dirty your chain gets. Muc-Off's Dry Weather Chain Lube is intended for dry, dusty conditions, so it is less suited to a run of wet winter commutes.

WHY CLEANING MATTERS AS MUCH AS THE LUBE

Spraying fresh lube over a layer of grit leaves that grit on the chain. After a salty or dirty ride, rinse the drive-chain area, apply Muc-Off Motorcycle Chain Cleaner, agitate built-up grime with a chain brush and rinse the cleaner away as directed. Dry the chain thoroughly before lubricating it. Muc-Off's cleaner is listed as suitable for standard, O-ring, X-ring and Z-ring chains.

HOW TO APPLY CHAIN LUBE

  1. Start with a clean, dry chain. Check your motorcycle manual for its chain-care and tension instructions.
  2. Shake the lube can. Apply a thin, even coating to the inside run of the chain while turning the rear wheel by hand, so the lubricant reaches the links and rollers. Never run the engine to spin the wheel during application.
  3. Keep it off the brakes and tyres. Aim carefully, protect nearby braking surfaces from overspray and wipe away any stray lubricant. A UV torch can help reveal coverage and overspray because Muc-Off's Wet and All-Weather formulas contain UV dye.
  4. Wipe off excess and allow the lube to settle. Follow the directions on the can before riding.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU LUBE YOUR CHAIN DURING WINTER?

There is no single interval for every bike or commute. Check the chain regularly, follow your motorcycle manufacturer's service schedule and clean and re-lubricate after especially wet, salty or muddy rides. A water-resistant lube helps protect the chain, but it does not remove road salt or replace cleaning.

For most riders facing consistently wet winter roads, Motorcycle Wet Weather Chain Lube is the strongest fit. Pair it with regular chain cleaning and drying; switch to All-Weather if your conditions vary, or Off-Road All-Weather if your winter rides are mainly on muddy trails.
